Siddhānta — the theory
A day is not one thing. To Jyotiṣa it has five limbs — that is what pañcāṅga means: pañca, five; aṅga, limb. And the marvel is that all five are read from just two moving lights — the Sun and the Moon — and the angle between them. Give an instrument only those two longitudes and it will tell you the whole character of the day.
The five are the tithi (the lunar day, from how far the Moon has pulled ahead of the Sun), the vāra (the weekday and its planetary lord), the nakṣatra (where the Moon sits among the mansions), the yoga (the sum of the two lights), and the karaṇa (half a tithi). Together they are the day’s fingerprint — consulted before any beginning, to elect a muhūrta, a moment in tune with the sky.

Jyotiṣa refines the same sky into five exact measures. It splits the Moon’s phase into thirty tithis, sites the Moon among twenty-seven nakṣatras, sums the two lights into a yoga and halves the tithi into a karaṇa — then reads the day’s fitness for any act from all five at once.
A day is not empty time to be filled — it has a grain, a quality, a face turned toward some acts and away from others. To read the pañcāṅga before beginning is to ask the day’s consent: to plant, to marry, to set out, when the limbs are willing. It is the discipline of moving with time rather than against it.

The West reads the same two lights but tells the day more simply — the seven-day planetary week (Sun→Sunday, on to Saturn) and the Moon’s phase, new to full. Weekday-lord and lunar phase it keeps; the tithi’s thirty steps, and the nakṣatra, yoga and karaṇa, are Jyotiṣa’s alone.

The five limbs read a day; the calendar built from them must also survive the year — and here two clocks beat against each other. A lunar month (new moon to new moon) runs about 29½ days; a solar month (saṅkrānti to saṅkrānti) about 30⅖. The mismatch produces three named irregularities every pañcāṅga must handle:
Because the lunar month is the shorter, about every third year one whole lunar month passes with no saṅkrānti inside it — the Sun never changes sign. That month is counted twice: the adhika, the leap-month that keeps Ugādi and the festivals in their proper seasons. New undertakings wait; the extra month is given to vrata, study and charity.
Far rarer — once in 19 years, sometimes 141 — a single lunar month swallows two saṅkrāntis, and a month drops from the calendar. It can only happen in winter, when the Sun crosses fastest: only ever Kārtika, Mārgaśīrṣa or Puṣya. The lost month's rites are divided between its two neighbours.
Four months are marked śūnya — "empty" for beginnings — because through them the Sun walks a dual-natured (dvisvabhāva) sign: Caitra with the Sun in Mīna, Āṣāḍha in Mithuna, Bhādrapada in Kanyā, Puṣya in Dhanus. The almanacs flag them; the muhūrta-books route the great beginnings around them.
The Arka note — the mechanism is frame-free: two real periods beating against each other would intercalate in any zodiac. But which month gains or loses rides the saṅkrānti — a nirayana ingress — so the named month, like every sign-name, belongs to the frame.
Abhyāsa — read a day from two lights
Here is the living almanac. The ring carries only two draggable lights — the ☉ Sun and the ☽ Moon. Move either one and watch all five limbs recompute at once: the tithi and pakṣa from how far the Moon leads the Sun, the nakṣatra from the Moon alone, the yoga from their sum, the karaṇa from half a tithi, and the vāra from the seven-lord week. Set the two lights close together for a new moon, opposite for a full — and read the day that makes.
This wheel is a longitude instrument, not a rāśi chart — the two lights carry real degrees, and the five limbs are computed from them exactly as an almanac would compute the day.

Movement II let you read a day; now put it to use. Each case gives an undertaking and the day an astrologer chose for it — name the limb that most decided its fitness. Nothing is scored; a wrong guess costs only the reasoning you build.
